Figure out if you need an Arborist or a Psyciatrist

Dendrophobia is the word. It means fear of trees. It’s a real thing of course and alot of the time it’s good because occassionally things get smashed by trees.

The question we arborists face all the time is this---

“Is the tree Safe?”

We have to be able to answer the question because we are dealing with a public that possesses varying degrees of dendrophobia.

Here are 3 things to help you decide if the fear is well placed.

1-- Target

2-- Size

3-- Probability

For example...

1-- Size?--its very big--

2-- Likely to fall? oh yeah

3-- Target--- if a tree falls in the forest….

RESULT

NOT VERY HAZARDOUS

Next example

SMALL FALL

1-- Target?-- House

2-- Likelihood of failure?-- It fell proving that it was indeed very likely to fall.

3-- Size?-- big but not THAT big...

RESULT

NO DRAMAS

Check out this one...

FALLEN TREE

#1-- How big?-- Damn big

#2-- Target value?-- OK pretty high isn’t it.

#3-- How likely?-- well it fell didn’t it……. But wait till you see why……

STUMP

Tree Faller Mistake

(no it wasn’t me)

RESULT

NOT HAZARDOUS

so long as you don’t cut down trees on a windy day.

Last but not least

HAZARD TREE

#1-- How big?-- very big

#2-- Precious target?-- bedroom at night.

#3-- How likely?-- a little too likely….

RESULT

DENDROPHOBIA REIGNS SUPREME

If you or someone you know suffers from symptoms of dendrophobia go through the simple 3 steps outlined in the examples above. This will help you decide if you need to see an arborist or a physiatrist.

Many of you should consult both.
